We are fortunate that we are able to teach Home Economics to the pupils at the school and therefore offer opportunity for more practical work.

Food at Ysgol Treffynnon is taught in our specialist rooms. We have a full range of equipment for use in Key Stage 3 and 4. The facilities help pupils to gain confidence in practical skills as well as knowledge of nutritional concepts. We actively promote and encourage the study of Food Technology and Home Economics by both boys and girls. The practical skills learned are true life skills. All students must study Food once at Key Stage 3 whilst Home Economics Food is an option for GCSE.

For GCSE all pupils study and complete the WJEC syllabus which comprises of two coursework pieces and one written exam at the end of Year 11. Coursework accounts for 60% of the overall mark with the majority of marks awarded for practical skills.

In Year 10 pupils studying Home Economics Food also get the opportunity to gain the Level 2 Basic Food Hygiene Certificate GCSE Child Development focuses on the study of the Physical, Intellectual, Emotional and Social (PIES) development of young children, from conception to the age of five years. Pupils will gain knowledge and understanding of:

  • parenthood, pregnancy and childbirth;
  • the needs of young children;

  • the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle and practical skills – e.g. cooking, first aid, etc.
